One thing that is interesting though. In recent years (especially re: Xinjiang) China has refrained from denying the existence of the firewell, and instead played by the strategy of insisting that it's used to prevent subversive activities such as terrorism. Almost like they took a page straight out of the Bush administration. But yeah, that still doesn't absolve the ridiculous irony of this announcement. This is truly mind boggling.
