While I organize my photos of Banna, allow me a quick whine about MySpace. Over a year ago, I deleted my account because I was hardly using it anymore and besides, everyone I needed to interact with online was already connected to me through Facebook.

Yesterday, I received an e-mail from MySpace notifying me what my 'friends' were up to. Evidently, they failed to delete my account properly and decided that, perhaps, after one year I might be persuaded to begin using their service again.

Needless to say, I was pretty peeved. I logged in and cancelled my account again, this time leaving a scathing note expressing my displeasure with their failure to adhere to my deletion request. Let's hope this time they get the message.

I'm not a conspiratorial or paranoid fellow when it comes to technology, but more incidents like this might turn me into one.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

  1. Yes, absolutely. Some sites just continue to spam you after you’ve deleted the utterly worthless account you had with them. Browbeating, of course, is the most effective form of marketing. I would say: The less email you get from a site, the more valuable its service is.

  2. Hi Matt,

Actually, this happened to me too. I haven’t actually deleted my MySpace account, just haven’t logged into it for ages. I remember opting-out of receiving updates into my email about when I got a new friend request and stuff like that, but about two weeks ago they started coming again just randomly.

I haven’t bothered to log in and delete my account and leave scathing remarks yet, but I think that’s definitely on the cards for the next few days!

    Hayley

  3. It just shows that giving so much information to a website, your contact details, your friends, all the details about what you and your friends are doing may come back to bite us all one day.
